Planning Your Trip

Where is Svalbard?

Svalbard is a Norwegian Arctic archipelago situated between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Longyearbyen, on the island of Spitsbergen, is the main settlement and the usual starting point for flights, accommodation and organised activities.

What is the difference between Svalbard and Spitsbergen?

Svalbard is the name of the entire archipelago. Spitsbergen is its largest island and the island where Longyearbyen is located. In German-speaking countries, “Spitzbergen” is sometimes used informally for the whole archipelago, but Svalbard is the geographically precise name.

How do I travel to Svalbard?

Most visitors fly to Longyearbyen via Oslo or Tromsø. SAS and Norwegian operate scheduled services, although frequency varies by season. Because Svalbard lies outside the Schengen Area, travellers pass through passport control when travelling between mainland Norway and Svalbard.

Do I need a passport to visit Svalbard?

Yes. Visitors must carry a valid passport or an accepted national identity card. This also applies to Norwegian citizens. Check the validity requirements of your airline and any countries you transit before departure.

Do I need a visa for Svalbard?

Svalbard itself does not normally require a visa, but most travellers reach it through mainland Norway and the Schengen Area. Travellers who require a Schengen visa may need a double-entry visa so they can enter the Schengen Area both before and after visiting Svalbard. Confirm your individual situation with the Norwegian immigration authorities.

How many days should I spend in Svalbard?

Four to seven nights is a useful starting point for a first visit. This gives you time for several different activities and some flexibility if weather affects a departure. Travellers with a strong interest in photography, wildlife or longer expeditions often benefit from a longer stay.

Should I book Svalbard activities in advance?

Advance booking is strongly recommended, especially during Easter, the midnight-sun period and on dates with cruise-ship calls. Small-group tours and private guides have limited capacity, and Arctic weather can make it useful to keep alternative dates available.

Can I visit Svalbard independently?

You can explore central Longyearbyen independently, but travel beyond the settlement requires serious safety planning. Polar bears, rapidly changing weather, sea ice, glaciers, avalanche terrain and limited communications make organised tours the safest and most practical choice for most visitors.

Is Svalbard suitable for solo travellers?

Yes. Longyearbyen is easy to navigate, and many organised activities accept individual bookings. Joining small-group tours is an effective way to explore safely and meet other travellers without arranging a private expedition.

Is Svalbard suitable for children?

Many families visit Svalbard successfully, but minimum ages vary by activity. Cold exposure, long days, boat movement and snowmobile regulations can limit participation. Always check age, height, fitness and clothing requirements before booking.

Seasons & Light

When is the best time to visit Svalbard?

There is no single best month. February to May is ideal for snow-based travel and the return of daylight; May to September offers boat access, tundra landscapes and long daylight; October to February is associated with darkness, blue light and northern-lights opportunities. Choose according to the experience you value most.

What are Svalbard’s main travel seasons?

Local tourism commonly divides the year into Northern Lights Winter, Sunny Winter and Polar Summer. The transitions are gradual, and exact snow, sea-ice and boating conditions vary from year to year.

When is the midnight sun in Longyearbyen?

The sun remains above the horizon from approximately late April until late August. Even outside this period, spring and early autumn can offer very long days and extended twilight.

When is the polar night in Longyearbyen?

The sun stays below the horizon from late October until mid-February. The darkest part of winter is not uniformly black: moonlight, snow, settlement lighting, twilight and aurora can create very different visual conditions.

When can I see the northern lights in Svalbard?

Aurora may be visible whenever the sky is dark enough, generally from autumn through winter. During the darkest period, northern lights can occasionally appear even during daytime hours. Clear skies and solar activity are required, so sightings can never be guaranteed.

Is Svalbard completely dark during winter?

Not always. Light conditions change throughout the polar night. Snow reflects artificial and natural light, while the moon, stars, aurora and blue twilight can make the landscape surprisingly luminous.

Weather & Clothing

What weather should I expect in Svalbard?

Svalbard has a dry Arctic climate, but conditions can change quickly. Wind often has a greater effect on comfort than the temperature alone. Rain, blowing snow, fog and rapid shifts in visibility are possible, including during summer.

How cold is Svalbard in winter?

Winter temperatures vary considerably and can be accompanied by strong wind chill. Coastal weather may change from relatively mild conditions to severe cold within a short period. Use current forecasts rather than relying only on monthly averages.

What should I wear in Svalbard?

Dress in adjustable layers: a moisture-managing base layer, insulating middle layers and a windproof outer layer. Add warm gloves or mittens, a hat, neck protection and suitable footwear. Avoid cotton next to the skin during cold-weather activities.

What should I pack for a summer visit?

Bring windproof and water-resistant outerwear, warm layers, gloves, a hat, sturdy footwear and sunglasses. Arctic summer does not necessarily mean warm weather, and boat tours can feel significantly colder than the temperature in town.

Do tour operators provide outdoor clothing?

Many winter operators provide expedition suits, boots, helmets or other specialist equipment for specific activities. What is included differs between tours, so read the booking information carefully and arrive with appropriate personal base layers.

Safety

Is Longyearbyen safe?

Longyearbyen is generally a calm and welcoming settlement, but Arctic hazards begin close to town. Weather, slippery roads, limited daylight and polar bears outside the central settlement require visitors to apply local safety advice.

Can I leave Longyearbyen without a guide?

Independent travel outside the recognised settlement area is not recommended for inexperienced visitors. Anyone travelling into the field must be prepared for polar bears and capable of handling navigation, weather, communications and emergency situations.

Are there polar bears near Longyearbyen?

Polar bears can occur anywhere in Svalbard, including occasionally near settlements. They are not a predictable tourist attraction. Never approach, follow or attempt to attract a bear, and obey instructions from local authorities and guides.

Do I need a firearm outside Longyearbyen?

People travelling outside the settlement must have suitable polar-bear protection and the competence to use it. Carrying a firearm without training is not a substitute for professional guiding, sound judgement and preventive behaviour.

Can tourists rent a rifle in Longyearbyen?

Rental is subject to documentation, legal requirements and the rental company’s assessment. Rules may change, and international visitors should not assume they are eligible. For most visitors, joining a qualified local guide is the safer solution.

What should I do if I see a polar bear?

Keep your distance, do not run towards or follow the animal, and immediately follow your guide’s instructions. If you are not with a guide, withdraw without provoking the bear and contact the authorities when safe to do so. Prevention and distance are the priorities.

Are avalanches a risk in Svalbard?

Yes. Avalanche terrain exists close to Longyearbyen and across the archipelago. Snow conditions, wind loading and temperature can change rapidly. Do not enter avalanche terrain without appropriate knowledge, equipment and local assessment.

Is glacier travel dangerous?

Glaciers contain crevasses, meltwater channels and unstable ice. Snow may hide hazards. Glacier travel requires route knowledge, rescue equipment and technical competence; it should not be treated as an ordinary walk.

Do I need travel insurance for Svalbard?

Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is strongly recommended. Check that it covers Arctic activities, weather delays, medical evacuation and any specific tour you plan to join. Private expeditions outside commonly travelled areas may face additional insurance and notification requirements.

What is the emergency number in Svalbard?

Norway’s emergency numbers apply: 112 for police, 113 for medical emergencies and 110 for fire. Mobile coverage is limited outside the settlements, so field parties may require satellite communication or other emergency equipment.

Svalbard Travel Guide

Wildlife

Can I see polar bears on a trip to Svalbard?

It is possible, particularly on longer ship-based expeditions, but no responsible operator can guarantee a sighting. Polar bears range over enormous areas, often associated with sea ice. Many land-based visitors never see one.

Which animals can I see around Longyearbyen?

Depending on season and chance, visitors may encounter Svalbard reindeer, Arctic foxes, ptarmigan and numerous seabirds. Boat tours may also offer opportunities for seals, walrus or whales, but all wildlife encounters are unpredictable.

When is the best time to see wildlife?

Different species follow different seasonal patterns. Summer is particularly active for migratory birds and marine wildlife, while reindeer and Arctic foxes live in Svalbard year-round. Weather, sea ice, food availability and chance remain decisive.

Can wildlife sightings be guaranteed?

No. Ethical wildlife tourism works with natural behaviour rather than staging encounters. A guide can select promising habitats and interpret signs, but cannot control where wild animals appear.

How close may I approach wildlife?

Keep enough distance that your presence does not alter the animal’s behaviour. Never surround, chase, feed or block an animal’s route. Some species and situations are subject to specific legal minimum distances, so always follow current regulations and guide instructions.

May I feed Arctic foxes, reindeer or birds?

No. Feeding wildlife changes natural behaviour, increases conflict and may spread disease. It can also place animals at risk after visitors leave.

Are puffins found in Svalbard?

Atlantic puffins breed in parts of Svalbard during summer, although they are less dominant than species such as guillemots, little auks, kittiwakes and fulmars. Small-boat bird tours can provide good observation and photography opportunities.

Activities

What are the most popular things to do in Svalbard?

Popular activities include sightseeing, photography tours, boat trips, hiking, dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice-cave visits and multi-day expeditions. Availability depends heavily on season, snow, sea ice and weather.

Are boat tours available all year?

No. The main boat season is generally during the ice-free months, but exact opening and closing dates vary. Sea ice, swell, wind and visibility can affect individual departures and routes.

Can I take a snowmobile tour in summer?

Snowmobile tours depend on adequate snow cover and are primarily winter and spring activities. Driving on bare ground is prohibited. Summer travel normally shifts towards boats, hiking and vehicle-based sightseeing.

Are Svalbard tours physically demanding?

Difficulty ranges from easy sightseeing to strenuous mountain and glacier expeditions. Read the activity description honestly, disclose medical or mobility concerns and ask the operator about walking distance, terrain, cold exposure and emergency access.

What happens if bad weather cancels my tour?

Operators may delay, reroute or cancel activities when conditions are unsafe. The applicable refund or rebooking terms depend on the operator’s booking conditions. Build flexibility into your itinerary and avoid scheduling your most important tour immediately before departure.

Should I choose a private guide or a group tour?

Group tours are cost-effective and social. A private guide offers more flexibility in pace, subjects, timing and photography stops. Private guiding is especially valuable for families, small groups, filmmakers and travellers with specialised interests.

Svalbard Travel Guide

Photography

Is Svalbard a good photography destination?

Yes. Dramatic seasonal light, open landscapes, wildlife, glaciers, historic sites and rapidly changing weather create exceptional photographic variety. The most productive approach is to remain flexible rather than planning a single fixed image.

Which lenses should I bring to Svalbard?

A wide-angle or standard zoom is useful for landscapes and settlements, while a telephoto lens is essential for responsible wildlife photography. A practical two-lens setup often covers more situations than a large collection that is difficult to handle outdoors.

How do I protect camera equipment from the cold?

Carry spare batteries close to your body, avoid breathing directly onto cold viewfinders and allow equipment to warm gradually inside a closed bag to reduce condensation. Use simple controls and gloves you can operate safely in wind.

Can I fly a drone in Svalbard?

Drone use is heavily restricted by aviation, environmental, settlement and protected-area rules. Longyearbyen lies close to an airport, and additional restrictions apply near people, wildlife and sensitive locations. Never fly based only on a consumer drone app; check current Norwegian and local rules before every flight.

Can I photograph the Svalbard Global Seed Vault?

You can photograph the exterior from public areas, but the vault is not normally open to tourists. Do not block traffic or enter restricted infrastructure. A guided sightseeing tour provides context and helps visitors reach appropriate viewpoints.

Practical Information

What currency is used in Svalbard?

The Norwegian krone (NOK) is used. Card payments are widely accepted in Longyearbyen, and many visitors complete their stay without cash. It is still wise to carry a backup payment method.

Is Svalbard expensive?

Transport, accommodation, food and guided activities cost more than in many mainland destinations because of remoteness, logistics and safety requirements. Booking early, travelling outside peak dates and combining free town activities with selected guided tours can help control costs.

Is there mobile coverage and Wi-Fi?

Longyearbyen has good connectivity by Arctic standards, and hotels and restaurants commonly offer Wi-Fi. Coverage becomes unreliable or disappears beyond the settlements, so never depend on an ordinary mobile phone for wilderness safety.

Can I drink tap water in Longyearbyen?

Tap water is no longer recommended for drinking in Longyearbyen. Due to water quality issues experienced in recent years, we recommend purchasing bottled drinking water from a local shop.

Is there a hospital in Longyearbyen?

Longyearbyen has a hospital providing primary and emergency services, but specialist treatment may require transport to mainland Norway. Bring sufficient prescription medication and suitable insurance.

Are shops open every day?

Longyearbyen has a supermarket, outdoor shops, galleries, souvenir stores and other services, but opening hours vary by season and holidays. Check current hours locally rather than relying on older travel guides.

How do I get from Svalbard Airport to Longyearbyen?

An airport bus normally meets scheduled arrivals and stops at the main accommodation properties. Taxis are also available. The drive to central Longyearbyen is short, but transport details and prices should be checked before travel.

Do I need a rental car in Longyearbyen?

Most central services are within walking distance, and tours generally include transport. A car may be useful for experienced visitors exploring the limited road system, but it does not provide access to the wider archipelago.

What languages are spoken in Longyearbyen?

Norwegian is the official language, but English is widely used in tourism and everyday life. Longyearbyen is an international community, and some guides also offer German, French, Mandarin and other languages.

Responsible Travel

How can I travel responsibly in Svalbard?

Choose established local operators, follow marked access guidance, keep distance from wildlife, avoid leaving waste and do not remove natural or cultural objects. Minimise unnecessary disturbance and accept that weather and wildlife take priority over a planned itinerary.

May I collect fossils, stones or historical objects?

Do not remove cultural remains, bones, antlers or objects associated with historic sites. Cultural heritage in Svalbard is strongly protected. Fossil collecting is also restricted in protected areas and may be inappropriate elsewhere; seek current guidance before taking anything.

Why should I stay on paths near nesting birds?

Ground-nesting and cliff-nesting birds are vulnerable to disturbance. A person approaching too closely can cause adults to leave nests, expose eggs or chicks and attract predators. Follow local signs and give colonies generous space.

Are large parts of Svalbard protected?

Yes. Much of Svalbard’s land and surrounding marine environment is protected through national parks, nature reserves and other designations. Access rules vary, and some areas have seasonal or activity-specific restrictions.
