The tour covers almost every accessible road in and around Longyearbyen and includes a variety of carefully selected photo stops. It provides a broad introduction to the settlement, its history, research, wildlife, mining heritage and everyday life in the High Arctic.
We begin in the wide Adventdalen valley, where the landscape is shaped by rivers, mountains, coal mining and scientific installations. Depending on the season and visibility, Svalbard reindeer, birdlife and other wildlife may also be seen.
The route continues west of town towards the airport area, the Global Seed Vault and the Arctic World Archive before returning through Longyeardalen and the settlement itself.

An introduction to Svalbard’s main settlement
The sightseeing tour is designed as an ideal first activity after arriving in Longyearbyen. It gives you a useful geographical overview and helps place the settlement’s landmarks, valleys and institutions into their wider historical context.
Depending on visibility, the route may include views towards the EISCAT radar installations and the Kjell Henriksen Observatory. Other landmarks discussed during the tour include the university centre, Svalbard Church, the cemetery, Huset, the hospital, the power station, the Governor’s residence and offices, dog yards and the former coal mines.
The guide explains both the earlier mining settlement and present-day Longyearbyen, including infrastructure, local administration, research, tourism and practical aspects of daily Arctic life.

A comfortable sightseeing experience
The tour is conducted by vehicle and requires little walking. It is classified as suitable for most guests.
Guests using a folding wheelchair are welcome on request. The vehicle has no specialised wheelchair conversion, but a folding wheelchair can normally be transported in the luggage compartment.
Drinks and snacks are not served during this tour. There is no separate child discount. Private bookings can also be arranged.

A folding wheelchair can normally be transported on request, but the vehicle does not have specialised wheelchair adaptations.
