Safety decisions in Svalbard are based on current conditions, qualified judgement and respect for the environment.
A changing environment
Weather, wind, visibility, temperature, avalanche conditions, sea ice and sea state can change quickly. Routes and schedules may therefore be adjusted at short notice.
Follow your guide
Participants must follow instructions from guides, drivers, captains and crew. A guide may refuse or stop participation when a person’s condition, equipment or behaviour creates an unacceptable risk.
Polar bear safety
Polar bears can occur anywhere in Svalbard outside the settlements. Guests must never approach, follow or feed wildlife. Travel outside the settlement requires appropriate knowledge and safety measures.
Medical considerations
Medical resources and evacuation options in Svalbard are limited. Guests must disclose relevant health, mobility or medication information before the activity and carry necessary personal medication.
Insurance
Suitable travel insurance should cover medical treatment, search and rescue where applicable, evacuation, cancellation, delay and the activities undertaken.
Wildlife and environmental responsibility
Safety and animal welfare take priority over photographs, schedules or planned encounters. Keep distance, avoid disturbance and leave no waste.
Activity changes
A change of route or duration made for safety reasons does not automatically mean that the service has not been delivered. Each situation is assessed according to the booking terms and the service actually provided.
